Ten Minutes a Day

Ten Minutes a Day

Here’s an easy ten-minute self-coaching process you can use to get insight into any challenge you’re experiencing, based on the three-brain framework I wrote about a few weeks ago.

Set aside ten minutes in a quiet place where you can write undisturbed.

First, write about the challenge you’re experiencing. Describe it in a few sentences, being as clear and factual as you can. This is drawing on the Executive brain – the rational, verbal, analyzing part of our brains.

Second, ask yourself, “What is my biggest fear about this situation?” This taps into your Protector brain – the part of brain that is focused on survival, always on the lookout for danger, and is often running outdated programs of what it thinks you need to do to stay safe.

After you get your biggest fears down, comfort and reassure that part of your brain in writing. If the worst thing your brain can imagine happened, how would you handle it?

Lastly, tune into your Sage brain – the wise part of you that has a bigger perspective. The following are ways to connect with that inner wisdom – experiment and see what works best for you in any given situation.

  • What would you say to a friend going through this challenge?

  • Imagine it is several years in the future. What advice would you give yourself looking back on this situation?

Try doing this process ten minutes every day for a week and see what new insights you gain.
