Books!

Every few months I share a list of the books I’ve been reading that have had the biggest impact on me.

Here’s my list for 2023 so far (the descriptions are from the publishers’ notes).

I’m excited to share these powerful books by women authors of diverse backgrounds.

South to America: A Journey Below the Mason-Dixon to Understand the Soul of a Nation, by Imani Perry

“An elegant meditation on the complexities of the American South—and thus of America—by an esteemed daughter of the South and one of the great intellectuals of our time. An inspiration.” —Isabel Wilkerson

The Last Nomad: Coming of Age in the Somali Desert, by Shugri Said Sahl

“A remarkable and inspiring true story that stuns with raw beauty about one woman's resilience, her courageous journey to America, and her family's lost way of life.”

Maame: A Novel, by Jessica George

"An utterly charming and deeply moving portrait of the joys—and the guilt—of trying to find your own way in life." —Celeste Ng

Olga Dies Dreaming: A Novel, by Xochitl Gonzalez

“A blazing talent debuts with the tale of a status-driven wedding planner grappling with her social ambitions, absent mother, and Puerto Rican roots—all in the wake of Hurricane Maria.”

The Swimmers: A Novel, by Julie Otsuka

This novel "starts as a catalogue of spoken and unspoken rules for swimmers at an aquatic center but unfolds into a powerful story of a mother’s dementia and her daughter’s love" (The Washington Post).

Memoir as Medicine: The Healing Power of Writing Your Messy, Imperfect, Unruly (but Gorgeously Yours) Life Story, by Nancy Slonim Aronie

“A wonderfully fresh and frank guide to why and how to write personal stories that will heal, liberate, inspire — and entertain — both writer and reader.”

Those are my favorite books of the year so far.

Send an email to liz@happybrainlife.com and tell me what you’ve been reading!

Love,

Liz

P.S. In April I’ll be taking a break from my business while I travel with my husband, celebrating our 36th wedding anniversary:) I’ll be back in May and I have a lot of ideas for a fun new writing program, so watch for the announcement!
