What Does "Rewire Your Brain" Mean?

Dear Friend,

“Rewiring” or “retraining” your brain simply means to create new neural pathways in your brain.

To be efficient, the human brain evolved to build neural pathways for anything we do often.

For example, remember what it was like learning to drive a car? At first you had to be conscious of everything you were doing. But soon your brain had developed neural pathways for all the various aspects of driving and it became automatic.

Our brains are constantly doing that - making a neural pathway for anything that we are thinking, feeling, or doing often. The more often our brain is using that pathway, the more deeply engrained it becomes.

That can be helpful if our thoughts, feelings, and actions are leading us to greater health and happiness.

But for a lot of us, living in our stressful world, our habitual thoughts, feelings, and actions are contributing to keeping us constantly immersed in the hormones of stress, which can have a lot of negative impacts on our mental and physical health.

Fortunately, we can consciously rewire our brains and create new habitual thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

Like any habit change, it takes effort, but it is so worth it!

In future posts I’ll be talking about simple ways we can rewire our brains for greater health and happiness.

One way to start is to begin paying attention to your habits.

  1. What thoughts do you think over and over throughout the day? Are they helpful or are they creating more stress for you?

  2. What emotions do you experience frequently? Are they supportive of your health and happiness?

  3. What behaviors do you do out of habit rather than conscious choice?

Becoming consciously aware of our existing neural pathways is a great step towards rewiring our brains.
