More Books to Share

Last year at this time I was waking up to the reality of systemic racism in the United States.

Since then I’ve been on a journey to learn more and find ways to contribute to the anti-racism movement.

Every few months I’m sharing a list of the books and other resources I’m finding most helpful.

Previous lists:

Here are four more books - two fascinating, eye-opening nonfiction books and two beautiful novels I found deeply moving (descriptions are from the publishers):

Twisted: The Tangled History of Black Hair Culture by Emma Dabiri

“This timely and resonant essay collection from Guardian contributor and prominent BBC race correspondent Emma Dabiri explores the ways in which black hair has been appropriated and stigmatized throughout history, with ruminations on body politics, race, pop culture, and Dabiri’s own journey to loving her hair.”

The Whiteness of Wealth: How the Tax System Impoverishes Black Americans--and How We Can Fix It by Dorothy A. Brown

“A groundbreaking exposé of racism in the American taxation system from a law professor and expert on tax policy.”

“Important reading for those who want to understand how inequality is built into the bedrock of American society, and what a more equitable future might look like.”—Ibram X. Kendi, #1 New York Times bestselling author of How to Be an Antiracist

The Final Revival of Opal and Nev by Dawnie Walton

“An electrifying novel about the meteoric rise of an iconic interracial rock duo in the 1970s, their sensational breakup, and the dark secrets unearthed when they try to reunite decades later for one last tour.”

The Prophets by Robert Jones, Jr.

“A singular and stunning debut novel about the forbidden union between two enslaved young men on a Deep South plantation, the refuge they find in each other, and a betrayal that threatens their existence.”

What anti-racism resources are you finding most helpful?

Take good care of your precious self. Our world needs your gifts of kindness, compassion, and empathy now more than ever!
